video cameras

Hi to all, Anyone here have any luck using a hard drive camera for flying videos? I purchased a Sony with a 30GB hard drive thinking it would be easier to download to my laptop and burn to DVD. Well, the idea was good but with even a small amount of vibration the camera turns itself off to save the HD from damage. Is it only the Sony brand or do all of them do that. I guess it's back to the mini8 for now. I'm open for suggestions. Thanks, Todd

Todd, I did a lot of "Googleing" & budget research 8-\ to determine what camcorder would be best for my desires to record & share the views! I'd had a smaller Samsung SC-X110 camcorder (w/ MemStkProDuo) but it also seemed to be susceptible to vibrations or RFI from the engines ignition system.
The Sony HandyCam DCR-HC96 is what I ended up purchasing to use for this purpose. DV tapes are slow, but easy to edit with no compression of information. It allows the use of a LANC remote for switch, it has an AV input for connection of external bullet (helmet) cameras. With the use of external cameras you may not get the vibrations that are a problem with any camera. So does your 30GB have the AV input at least? The LANC remote could help to switch from main to external lens & back again. Otherwise I guess you'll have to try the IR remote that probably came with your camera.
I'm still working through my system setup for a power supply, remote lenses & cabling. But some of the emuvideo productions by Damien helped me understand what I needed to look for!
Good luck & the Mini 8 ain't so bad!!

Have you tried mounting the camera on the control bar (connected to the wing)
Its is the smoothest part of your trike.

I'm in the prosess of bying a new camcorder and was looking at one with a hard drive but now I have to go else where ( thx for the heads up )...Now i'm looking at a new Canon FS11, the only thing it lack is the A/V in but it looks like a good camera. It records on a Flash memory..I just hope it dont have the problems like Jackey had with its Samsung..

Thats quite a camera! It's also about $1000US. I might have to play with my Sony miniDV a while longer but I will put the Canon on my Christmas list for sure :-)

Hi Todd
My son (Colin ) I did some research after having the same problem and found that HDD and Disc,s have a switch off with vibration, the best option is a tape

Gidday Todd, you know ...i've got the same sony HD video camera as you have by the sound of and i've tryed mounting it in all sorts of places over my trike and with no luck...it just keeps switching itself off as a result of vibration! i've tryed holding it in my hand whilst flying, it work's but its to uncomfortable! especially when your flying through clear air turbulance, so im going to make up some sort of bracket out of a trypod, i'll let you know how it go's. as for downloading the files onto my computer (and my sony HD came with no editing program), i also had the same problem as you, so now i'm using Sony "Vagus" editing software! and that's working well. happy trails, cheers,Dave. I've got a Sony HDR-SR7e and I got the shutdown sitting in the back seat holding the camera. Once we reached altitude and the revs dropped to about 4500, I was able to film normally, so I have to assume that it's shutting down because of the RF interference - rather than vibration.

I've done some research but can't find anything about shielding. I'm pretty sure that everything would work perfectly if only there was some sort of RF shield around the camera.

The HD video quality was superb, even though I missed the take-off. Perhaps even sitting in the front seat would have been far enough away from the engine - not sure.

I don't know about RF being the reason. I even tried mounting my camera out on the tip of the wing, plenty far enough from RF interference, but you could see upon playback it would shake due to taxiing on the grass and shut itself off. Ended up a lot easier to use my old tape camera and a digital converter. Anyone want to buy a very slightly used HDD Sony? Lol.
